SERAP Urges Zuckerberg, Meta to Pay $220M Fine, Compensate Privacy Violation Victims

Meta Platforms Inc., the parent company of Facebook, has been fined $220 million for violating Nigerian consumer rights and data privacy laws.

The fine was originally imposed by Nigeria’s Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) and was upheld by their Tribunal last week.

In response to the ruling, the Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has called on Meta’s CEO, Mark Zuckerberg, to pay the fine immediately.

SERAP has also demanded that Meta compensate victims of privacy violations and take further actions to ensure that similar breaches do not occur again.

Kolawole Oluwadare, Deputy Director of SERAP, emphasized that Meta must take responsibility for its actions and ensure full compliance with both Nigerian and international data protection standards. The organization has also urged the company to provide transparency in its operations and ensure accountability for those responsible for the violations.

The fine follows an extensive investigation by the FCCPC, which found that Meta had failed to adequately protect the privacy of Nigerian users.

Additionally, the Tribunal upheld a $35,000 fee awarded to the FCCPC for the costs incurred during the investigation.
