TVC News has become the first Nigerian broadcaster to launch AI-powered news anchors delivering bulletins in five major local languages. The news anchors can deliver news in English, Yoruba, Hausa, Igbo, and Pidgin, marking a significant stride in improving accessibility and inclusivity across Nigeria.
According to a statement by TVC Communications, the innovation is part of a broader newsroom modernization strategy aimed at expanding reach, accelerating news delivery, and engaging underserved audiences.
“This pioneering innovation represents a significant milestone in the broadcasting history of Nigeria,” the statement reads. “Our AI anchors will complement and assist our human capital assets to deliver and enhance the company’s strategic goals… and most importantly, communicate to our diverse audience in the language they understand.”
The initiative positions TVC as a trailblazer in media tech, integrating AI tools while maintaining strong editorial oversight. Each AI-generated bulletin is reviewed by human editors and embedded with digital watermarks to prevent misinformation and ensure compliance with the Nigerian Broadcasting Code.
While acknowledging public concerns around deepfakes and AI misinformation, TVC emphasizes that the AI anchors are meant to support and not replace journalists, combining scalability with human judgment.
CEO Victoria Ajayi noted that this rollout demonstrates TVC’s commitment to innovation, stating:
“Our AI news anchors will enable us to take our news coverage to the next level as we showcase our commitment to leveraging technology to drive growth using innovation.”
With this launch, TVC is not only pioneering AI in Nigerian broadcasting but also setting the pace for other African newsrooms to explore how local language delivery and emerging technologies can coexist.
