Spotify iOS Payment Update Leads to Surge in Premium Subscriptions

Spotify has revealed a major increase in Premium subscriptions on iOS, following its recent update allowing users to access external payment links directly within the app. This move comes in the wake of a legal victory that forced Apple to loosen its App Store payment policy in the U.S.

In a new legal filing supporting Epic Games in its ongoing case against Apple’s App Store restrictions, Spotify claims that enabling web-based payments on iOS has already had a “significant” impact on user upgrades. The company’s internal data shows a noticeable spike in iOS users switching from the free version to Spotify Premium — a sign that users prefer direct payment options over Apple’s in-app billing system.

This became possible after a 2025 U.S. court order required Apple to let developers direct users to alternative payment methods, avoiding Apple’s 15–30% commission fees.

Spotify was one of the first companies to implement the change, updating its iOS app with a new Premium Destination Page that displays pricing details and links users to an external checkout page.

According to Spotify, this update has driven more conversions among iOS users than it has on Android, where such features already existed.

The company also noted early traction in its audiobook sales, thanks to new in-app messaging and purchasing pathways made possible by Apple’s compliance. While Spotify didn’t share exact numbers, it emphasized that these improvements show how App Store policy changes can benefit both developers and consumers. The filing also points to new product innovations that would not have been possible under Apple’s former restrictions.

This statement from Spotify adds to the growing support for Epic Games from other tech firms like Microsoft, as Apple continues to appeal the court’s decision. The legal battle has already led to Fortnite being reinstated on the App Store after a five-year ban, and is currently in review at the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit.

As the case develops, the ability to offer external billing options on iOS could reshape how developers monetize their apps, and Spotify’s success may only be the beginning.
